SEQUOIT CREEK PARK
Sequoit Creek Park is a transformative 4.5-acre landscape project built in the heart of downtown Antioch, Illinois. Once an abandoned and underutilized site, the area has been reimagined into a vibrant community asset that has reshaped the character and vitality of the downtown district. Anchored by the natural beauty of Sequoit Creek, the park creates a seamless integration of ecological restoration, community gathering space, and resilient landscape design.
A central feature of the project was the restoration and rerouting of the creek, a process made exceptionally challenging by fluctuating water levels, steep grades, and the need to maintain environmental sensitivity throughout construction. The design team employed a robust palette of natural material including 800 tons of natural outcropping stone, 700 tons of granite boulders, and custom-crafted stone stairs to stabilize the site, create accessible circulation, and celebrate the site’s geology.
To bring the landscape to life, over 4,000 cubic yards of custom planting mix were installed along with 65 4-inch specimen trees, thousands of shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses, and expanses of custom-grown native vegetated mat. These layers of vegetation provide seasonal interest, improved habitat value, and long-term ecological resilience.
What was once a neglected parcel is now a thriving natural sanctuary and social hub. Sequoit Creek Park stands as a model of how thoughtful landscape architecture can restore ecological function, overcome complex site constraints, and catalyze community revitalization. It is a lasting gem for future generations—an enduring testament to the power of landscape to heal, unite, and inspire.
